EDITORIAL — A prediction about the mayor’s ‘resignation consideration’

An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

WHAT WILL HE D0? Will Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson pull the plug on Monday at 10 a.m.? That’s the appointed day and hour for a press conference he’s called at the Columbia Street lookout for an announcement about “resignation consideration.”

The mayor hasn’t told me what he’s going to do; I have no insider information. But I’ll wager that expectations of a resignation will be dashed and that he has something else in mind, which I’ll get to in a moment.

Since Hamer-Jackson sent out notices Friday of his press conference, the media have been inflating their stories with accounts of his many controversies and clashes with the eight councillors, who called for his resignation a few weeks ago.

But the term “consideration” is key to understanding what the mayor is up to. If he was planning to just quit, he more likely would have used words such as, “resignation announcement.” Which, of course, would have been a dead giveaway.

But I think he’ll have something quite different to say. In the past, I’ve outlined his options. He could resign, forcing a byelection for mayor, and go back to running his business, free of all the hassles he faces currently.

That seems unlikely. He could also resign and run again in the resulting byelection, which would clear things up with where things stand as far as the public goes, especially if he defeated one or two incumbent councillors who would almost certainly run against him. Since they’d have to resign as councillors to run, their departure could make way for some fresh faces to take their place, changing the council dynamic.

Or, he might simply announce that he intends to carry on, and issue a renewed call for cooperation with council. But he’s done that several times before. Why call a press conference for that?

No, there’s another option. I predict the mayor will offer to resign on the condition that all eight councillors also quit, which would force a byelection for a whole new council. That would probably clean things up a whole lot at City Hall, whether or not the mayor is victorious, and whether or not the incumbents all ran again.

It would be a throwing down of the gauntlet, which is more his style. I heartily doubt the councillors would have the political courage or inclination to accept the challenge, but it would certainly put a muzzle on their calls for him to resign — if they ever bring it up again, Hamer-Jackson would simply have to renew his nuclear-option, mutual-destruction offer.

Time to take your blinders off Bob. The council has been combative towards the mayor since day one. Bullied, silenced, harassed and basically told to stay home is how the mayor has been treated. Most of us are tired of it and would like to see all of them go now. Not 2 years down the road.

I think the mayor deserves credit for standing up to this nonsense as many would have folded and quit by now. I do not think he is totally the problem. However if he has to go then so do the gang of 8.

  3. And what if he is calling for someone else to consider resigning?

  4. I can’t see the Gang of Eight having the courage to fall on their swords and face the voters. RHJ has shown that he can see past the end of his nose and read the room. If he does in fact drop the challenge you’ll see a great deal of talk about not wanting to have the extra expense of an election, but here’s the kicker, have a referendum about Build Kamloops at the same time and then the citizens will REALLY have the last say.

Unfortunately, couldn’t agree with you more, Mr. Rothenburger. I wish it wasn’t so. For the good of the Community RHJ should take the highroad and step aside. Our present Council and staff have been quietly moving the City ahead since RHJ was benched and muzzled.

I can’t envisage RHJ stepping aside and giving up a $100 000 plus year gig. He has been combative since taking office.  Wouldn’t surprize me if RHJ doesn’t announce he is suing someone else. The man can’t avoid a fight.

    • What constitutes a great city is ultimately a matter of prospective and wether this council is “moving the city forward” is a matter of opinion.

What makes you think what shows up in a comment section is anything but opinion? I prefer a positive opinion over a negative one. Until I’m proven wrong, I must be right right.

        Cheers

You may be right on what you offer for his reason for calling a news conference, Mel. If he simply wanted to resign, would he do it differently?

If you’re right, there’s a great offer on the table from a guy who has worked with people for many years.  Make it a “win-win” option straight from the desk of a manager in a dealership, as it were.  “I’ll resign if all of you resign.”  “We’ll see who wins in a by-election.”

Having walked the walk carrying placards downtown in the morning, there still seems to be a lot of support for one of the municipal politicians.  Not so for “the gang”.

As one of them said already about us, “the voters”: “take your heads out of the sand, the weeds.”  Perhaps good advice for those on council who might take the chance of running in a by-election.

I’m looking forward to Monday’s news conference and your editorial afterwards, Mel.
