EDITORIAL – New rule from the NDP – don’t call yourself a British Columbian

An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

BRITISH COLUMBIANS have reason to be shaking their heads over an NDP government writing guide that tells us we should stop using the term “British Columbians.”

Here’s what it says: “The term ‘British Columbians’ is often used to reference people living in B.C. This term excludes Indigenous Peoples who may not identify with it. For many, they identify as members of their own sovereign nations and do not consider themselves part of one that has actively worked to assimilate their people.

“’British Columbians’ also excludes other groups such as newcomers and refugees. We recommend instead saying ‘people living in B.C.’”

OK, stop now. Reconciliation is important; let’s keep it from getting silly. Anyone who lives in this province is a British Columbian and should be proud of it. And do refugees and newcomers really not want to be British Columbians?

BC United MLA Ellis Ross, himself indigenous, got it exactly right in Question Period when he said, “Are you kidding? We’re all Canadians, we’re all British Columbians, and we’ve got bigger problems to solve.”

He added, “This effort to erase history and foster division is offensive.”

Indeed. For his part, Government House Leader Ravi Kahlon would rather ignore it, trying for the brushoff and claiming — just as Ross said — there are bigger problems to solve.

Both of them are correct. There are much bigger problems to work on. So why write such a stupid rule?

Among the bigger problems is the one of… reconciliation. There are serious things to do on that file. For example, the government’s plan for changes to the Land Act to give a louder indigenous voice on land matters has just been withdrawn for further consideration. That, after the government messed up the public consultation process.

Trying to control the way British Columbians speak is not a good use of anyone’s time. On the contrary, it creates division and works against reconciliation, not for it.

Would “people experiencing British Columbia” work?

The NDP’s own website refers to “British Columbians” numerous times. 900+ references. That is super offensive. They must address this egregious offence immediately and issue over 900 apologies. Plus damages for promoting colonialism.

First as tragedy. Then as farce.

  3. If everyone wanted to look at the idea of actually changing the name of the province to something … perhaps less British colonial than British Columbia, I would probably support the idea … depending on what they came up with.

If you google it, the reason BC got this name was: “Queen Victoria chose ‘British Columbia’ to distinguish what was the British sector of the Columbia District from the United States; ‘American Columbia’ or ‘Southern Columbia’, which became the Oregon Territory on August 8, 1848, as a result of the treaty.”

Ya … so the actual name of our province was dreamed up by an out of touch old lady, who got confused while looking at a map.

Maybe we do need to think about this.

You’ll be quite busy with your woke mission. Here are just a few other names to get you started. Let us know how this works out for you:

New Westminister (offensive because of ties to England)

Vancouver (Named after a white man)

Victoria (named after a British queen)

Newfoundland (offensive because it wasn’t a new found land, people already found it)

New Brunswick (same as above plus doubly offensive because it has ties to Britain)

      Whiterock (obviously offensive)

Surrey (Saxon heritage is highly offensive)

Regina (means queen, and that is highly Eurocentric).

Even your name is highly offensive. David comes from Christian roots, and we all know what the religious schools did across Canada.

Might I suggest some green tea … or maybe a little Ativan ??

        The difference here is,
… I appreciate the fact you have an alternate opinion.

  7. Wokeness continues. Soon every term will be deemed offensive by the Woke Brigades other than ones so ambiguous that it’s hard to determine what they mean.

Let’s get a party into power that is grounded in logic and reasonableness. Not a party that thinks changing “British Columbia” to “B.C.” does anything. Is this what our taxes are being used for? Unbelievable.

If you are offended by the names of provinces, you need to find something more to do with your time.
