EDITORIAL – TNRD board members forget they’re in it for public service

An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

I’VE SELDOM HEARD such nonsense from a politician as what’s been coming from Thompson-Nicola Regional District board chair Barbara Roden this week.

Roden’s defence of handsome pay increases for both rural board directors and for municipal directors over two years, which I told you about on Monday, is that it’s needed to encourage good people to run, more young people, and minorities.

The amount they get paid isn’t enough, she says, to support a family on. It’s barely minimum wage, she says, and board members “have to have a second job.”

Here’s a news flash: regional district board members aren’t supposed to make a living off their stipends. It’s not supposed to be their primary employment.

It’s about part-time public service. Certainly, they should get paid something for their efforts, and for legitimate expenses.

But it is not, I repeat not, like a regular job. As for this idea that TNRD must keep up with what other regional boards are paying themselves, it simply tells me that other regional district boards have been giving themselves massive raises as well.

Let’s remember that this board gave itself a 19 percent increase for rural directors and 11 per cent for municipal directors in 2019. So this new retroactive four percent plus 15 for rural directors next year, and four plus eight for city directors — which compounds to around 20 and 13 — is par for the course.

Oh, yeah, and the TNRD has gotten back to me with another take on the board’s gaffe in approving the 2024 increase but forgetting to specify what the amount is.

Administration acknowledges that “it could have been made clearer to people who were not already enmeshed in the matter, and will be considering with Chair Roden if any further discussion is required at future meetings.”

Indeed, further discussion should be about fixing the mistake. Better yet, the board should reconsider this out-of-step increase and think about public service.

  1. And just so there is FULL transparency – those City of Kamloops councillors who get the privelege of double dipping AND also voting themselves a raise are:

    Bill Sarai
    Dale Bass
    Katie Neustaeter
    Kelly Hall
    Margot Middleton
    Mike O’Reilley
    Reid Hamer-Jackson

    Must be nice hey?

  2. I believe it’s unnecessary for 7 of our 9 city council members to sit on the TNRD board regardless of how much they’re paid and what other perks they receive. Surely fewer council members are capable of bringing forward municipal concerns and ideas and providing the municipal perspective.

  3. To confirm, did all the CoK council’s board members voted supporting the pay raise?
Although slightly on a different track I guess they never learned a thing from the Gill/Gillis debacle.

  4. Mel…..great old school journalism.
In the photo, I believe I recognize two of the individuals who were involved in the “wildcat walkout” on St. Paddy’s Day in March.
By the way, I sent an email to the regional district shortly after that fiasco to ask if those who walked out had given prior notice and if they had been paid for the meeting they were supposed to have attended. NO REPLY.
What is it with politicians? There was no reply to a valid, pointed question.
I asked Mike O’Reilly the same question, reminding him that he had been a business owner and had employees. I asked if they would have been paid for walking out, without notice, for something of the nature the bunch of them did from the meeting at the regional district. NO REPLY
I asked Dale Bass, after I had found and safely disposed of the zip lock bags between Westmount Park and Moira House (bags which may well have contained powdered residue from fentanyl) how stupid she thought I was. NO REPLY
Before an election, it seems these folks are of the belief the general public is short on life skills and general knowledge about life. The answer to all of our problems is the plea, “elect me”…..”vote for me”. After the election honeymoon is over, it’s like being dumped by some cheap one night stand partner; you never hear from them again.
All the self-approved wage hikes don’t change a thing with this old guy who loves his dog more than most other things in life. A blow hard is a blow hard is a blow hard.
Thanks for allowing the rant, Mel. My best friend needs his morning walk.
