LETTER – Will Canada be safer because the House Speaker has resigned?

Re: EDITORIAL – How a standing O in Parliament has humiliated our entire country

Thanks for the article. I’d like to point out however, it wasn’t just Jews that would be embarrassed by the presence of Hunka.

Unless you haven’t read your accurate history, an array of peoples were targeted by the Nazis, including physically and mentally impaired people, homosexuals, Catholics and Jehovah’s Witnesses.

If history is not to repeat itself, it’s vital that all groups targeted by the Nazi regime be included when mentioning this horrible time during WW 2, of which both sides of my family in Poland were victims of.

In addition, I hope you don’t take pleasure at the loss of a a man’s job, as in the house speaker. When did it become as normal as apple pie to strip a person of their livelihood for making a mistake, big or small? Wouldn’t stocks, sack cloth, tar and feathering be better than a person not being able to support themselves?

Not being able to support oneself translates to a death sentence. Seems there’s no forgiveness anymore with some factions of society, as the human is now purportedly supposed to be perfect. Too often, stripping someone of their ability to support themselves is the go-to. What about suspension, a leave without pay absence, etc. What about forgiveness, as I was taught by my family who endured more pain and suffering than the mistake caused Canadians in Parliament the other day.

Too many people are ticking boxes in their little check lists of morality in destroying others. And then what? Will Canada be safer because someone doesn’t have a job? Will your life be better because someone doesn’t have a job?

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

“Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

“Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

“Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

—Martin Niemöller

Thank you.

  1. Ummm … you do realize that Rota is an MP, right? He still gets paid rather well.

Besides that, suggesting that the loss of a Speaker of the House position is equal to ‘stripping of livelihood’ and ‘Not being able to support oneself translates to a death sentence’ … is a little strong. This isnt a single mom working at seven eleven, its a politician who has been via political nepotism, given a position of power.

Furthermore … this is the world of politics, appearance and optics. It is not the real world, and it was not setup or is maintained to replicate the real world. EVERYONE who signs up for that live via a job in politics takes the risk of it being suddenly pulled out from under them at a moments notice .. and they all know that going in.

If you screw up publicly … you pay the price. And believe it or not … you dont want it any other way. You want the leadership system in our society to be wholly and completely accountable for their own actions. If they are not … then democracy itself is damaged, as you are only ever a couple decisions away from a dictatorship.

  2. I agree with the writer, it has become commonplace to ask for a resignation when a mistake is made and it accomplishes nothing. The media is making a huge deal of this, I am sure that most of the world hardly noticed it. Rota may still have a “job” for now, but many that are forced ti resign do not. It was really unfortunate it happened when Zelinsky was there however I am sue he has bigger things on his mind right now.
Also do not agree with Rothenbergers assessment that Trudeau is also to blame.
Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.

  3. Rota is still an MP. His income may be a bit lower but he still has “a job.” MPs shouldn’t be completely reliant on their parliamentary position anyway–what if Rota wasn’t elected next time? I’m sure he has something to fall back on, like his university job. And don’t worry–like all long-serving MPs he’ll have a better pension than most of us. He did the right thing in resigning.
