LETTER – ‘Bigot’ comment in editorial on Drag Storytime protest was unfair

Protest at library against Drag Storytime.

Re: EDITORIAL – Anti-Pride protesters should be ashamed of themselves

After listening to you converse on the news regarding the events that took place at the gay pride event, I was compelled to write to you.

It is sad and very offensive when those who have a belief in God are grouped together with a few overly emotional people and called bigots.

To ‘name call’ a fairly large population of people in Kamloops who have faith and belief in God bigots is very unfair.

There is a very large ‘non- religious’ group of people who are also upset and offended with drag queens reading to children.

Why should this group have the right to force their beliefs on those who are uncomfortable with it?

If you include Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Lutherans, etc., etc., into the ‘Bigot’ group there definitely will be a lot of offended people.

Our belief teaches we are to love ALL people. Love doesn’t mean you have to believe in and support in ideologies that are offensive to you.

  1. I don’t think you’re necessarily bigots, but you’re definitely idiots. The lady protester involved in the scuffle? She is completely off her rocker. She even referenced The Matrix movie and 5G.

It’s OK to not support drag shows, oppose homosexuality and other such issues if that’s your religious or personal belief. I think that particular view is quite antiquated by now, but feel free to hold your placard and talk about Jesus.

I support your right to think how you want, even if your mind has been hijacked like that poor poor woman. Just don’t ask me to fix stupid.

If the writer is referring to story-reading drag queens in her comment, “Why should this group have the right to force their beliefs on those who are uncomfortable with it?” nobody is forcing anyone to attend drag-queen storytime. The only people forcing their beliefs seem to be the placard-carrying harassers at the library door.

  3. Actually, a clear and unbias read of what was said in the original editorial definitely did use the term bigot and other direct epitaphs such as ‘ashamed of themselves’, ‘intolerance’ ‘obnoxious’ and ‘over-zealous’,

… but it was clearly directed at those in protest at the library, no one else.

The only mention of any ‘belief in god’ was in reference to the historic, well known connection to those involved in religions that were firmly against any form of homosexuality … as an ‘affront to god’ … also a well known claim.

Obviously the vast majority of people in our society, involved in religions or not, no longer appose these lifestyle choices that others make. Most religiously affiliated … or non religiously affiliated people, wouldn’t want to be at the library to protest anything.

The thing is … we all know that.

He said : “There are still people out there who believe homosexuality and its related shades are an unnatural affront to God.”

He didn’t say that anyone who believes in god,
also believes homosexuality is an afront to their beliefs.

He wasn’t calling religious people bigoted,
… he was calling those at the library bigoted.
    There’s a huge difference there.

No offence occurred here, unless you are setup to be easily offended, because you have been told that other people can offend you from a distance.
In such case, there’s nothing anyone can say that isnt offensive.
