EDITORIAL – Councillors would disagree with the mayor if he said the sky is blue

An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE the more they stay the same around the council table.

On the same day Kamloops City council approved a schedule for what it calls town hall meetings, it completely ignored an opportunity to release information on some of the controversial goings-on with Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson.

The format for the public meetings, which will be held in various parts of the city, is sorely lacking, but at least they’ve come up with something. On the other hand, councillors twiddled their thumbs as the mayor asked for a motion to release the full report of the investigation into his treatment of several City Hall staffers.

He also asked for the release of a mystery letter he said was presented to him in his office by three councillors. And, he requested that minutes of certain in-camera meetings in which “innuendos” were made about him also be brought forward to public.

As the mayor pointed out, council could release all of that material if it wanted to. Certainly, it was discussed behind closed doors and councillors can hide behind the cloak of confidentially and the fact it deals with “personnel” matters.

But council also has the authority to bring forward matters from closed meetings that are no longer required to be kept secret.

The report into complaints filed by staff members would simply have to be redacted with respect to identities, though councillors were comfortable in revealing earlier that one of the complainants was CAO David Trawin.

The mayor should have been more forceful in challenging the councillors to authorize release of the documents but they wouldn’t have done it anyway.

By the way, he also asked who is authorizing deputy mayors to do things even when he’s available. Again, councillors and staff were struck dumb.

Hamer-Jackson could make a motion declaring the sky is blue and the eight councillors would either ignore him or claim it’s green and yellow polka dots.

The councillors seem to have left their decorum behind once elected.
A friend remarked just yesterday he couldn’t believe how rude Coun. Bepple was to the mayor during the Public Inquiry NCIS queries.
I received incorrect answers and dismissive arrogance from Coun. Neustaeter when asking a question.
Bass, Sarai and Karpuk in particular have been rude to the mayor a number of times in public meetings.
Thank you to Coun. Middleton for not doing so, at least in public.
We get it: You Gang of 8 don’t like the mayor. Get over it and act professionally, please.

    • The very fastidious thing about Bepple and the other self-proclaimed activists and progressives is their parochial nature of picking and choosing who they bless as “intractable” which totally flies in the face of their doctrine. Their ignorance is remarkable.

      • It was meant to be “interactible” that is someone worth interacting with rather than “intractable”. An automatic spell checking modification which wasn’t caught quick enough before the “send” button got pushed…

A lot of people are concerned about them & likely with good reason. Has something been discovered by “the used car salesman” and that something is worth the effort of getting rid of him? Who knows? Has the RCMP become involved with an investigation into something that may have been discovered?
      Again, who knows?
The choice of words “uncharted waters” can cover any one of a number of scenarios.
There is no doubt the new Mayor has a number of folks who would like to see him gone from office.
Patience is the key on this one.

  3. Thanks Mel. Really.
The other local(ish) news providers offer their readers and listeners very little – zero about the continuous and obvious dysfunctions of our Council meetings.
    Cheers.

The Gang of Eight is attempting to navigate a course through uncharted waters. The destination may not be the one they expect or desire.

  5. Could we have a list/dissect of noticeable, meaningful achievements attributable to this council?
