POLICE – Man in custody after vehicle fire leads to discovery of firearms
A Kamloops man is facing six charges after being arrested on Talasa Way last night (May 14, 2023).
Around 7:20 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers were called to the 1600-block of Centennial Drive for a report of a vehicle fire, which soon after evolved into an investigation that included firearms offences.
“Thanks to the quick response of the frontline officers who attended the scene and conducted the initial investigation, police were able to identify a suspect, establish his location on Talasa Way, and obtain important information for risk assessment,” said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn.
“Due to the reported presence of firearms and other details of the investigation, the Southeast District Emergency Response Team attended; the apartment was contained, and surrounding units were evacuated.”
The suspect later exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.
A Kamloops man faces three charges related to possessing a .22 semi-automatic rifle, 858 semi-automatic rifle, and a shotgun, while prohibited from doing so; and three counts of using, carrying, transporting firearms in a careless manner. He was held for court.
The investigation into other offences, including the vehicle fire, is ongoing.
