POLICE – Man arrested, charged with assaulting a police officer

A Kamloops police officer was taken to hospital and a man is facing related assault charges following a call to a disturbance on Seymour Street Saturday night.

On April 22, 2023, around 10:40 p.m., Kamloops RCMP officers responded to the 400-block of Seymour Street for a report of a man in front of a building, with his pants down, throwing things, screaming, and banging on a glass door.

“A police officer attended, arrested a man, and attempted to take him into custody, at which point he allegedly assaulted her, then fled,” said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn.

“Additional officers were able to locate the suspect nearby and take him into custody. The victim officer was taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.”

Matthew Lawrence Ortt, 36, of Kamloops is charged with one count of assaulting a police officer. He was held by police for a bail hearing and remanded into custody. His next court appearance was scheduled for today, April 25, 2023.

A Full, Public Audio-Visual record would be useful; somewhat like in the Vancouver Airport Murder…just to ensure (only one) counterpoint to what RCMP call “the narrative.”

If only they had opened the door and given him the toilet paper he needed to finish his business, I’m sure everything would have been fine Marcus. Imagine the callousness of the officer interrupting a ranting madman in the middle of his business on the sidewalk in the middle of downtown on a busy Saturday night… shocking!
