FIRE – Strathcona Park blaze being investigated as criminal in nature
A large grass fire in Strathcona Park Wednesday afternoon is being treated as criminal in nature.
On April 19, 2023, around 2:44 p.m., Kamloops Fire and Rescue, Kamloops RCMP officers, and Kamloops Community Service Officers attended the blaze that was visible throughout the city, in the area of Powers Road and Strathcona Terrace.
“The Kamloops fire department and BC Wildfire Service did an amazing job extinguishing the fire quickly and preventing it from spreading further,” said Kamloops RCMP Superintendent Jeff Pelley.
“The origin of the fire has been established as a campfire and we’re now conducting a criminal investigation.”
Officers remain on scene collecting physical evidence and acquiring statements as part of the investigation. A camp had recently established in the area and police are looking to speak with anyone who may have information related to how the blaze occurred or know who is responsible.
Those with information are asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2023-13341.
It’s time that some of the nonsense at City Hall be put into abeyance and a realistic plan of action be made to combat this type of activity.
This was another instance where an interface fire could have resulted in loss of life. If it means some “tough love” in dealing with folks who cannot take care of themselves, then I think that is what has to happen.
