POLICE – Calls coming in fast and furious about bail-money scam
More than 30 calls have been received by Kamloops RCMP and Tk’emlups Rural RCMP in the past two days about a fraud scam, with some Kamloops residents being ripped off for thousands of dollars.
Scammers are calling landlines, posing as either legal counsel or friends of victims’ family members, who claim they need money to pay for bail or legal fees after being involved in an accident they are at fault in.
The scammers are also posing as a family member and on numerous occasions have been so convincing the victims believe the person to be their loved one in danger.
A female suspect was identified on two occasions picking up money from a residence. The female is identified as possibly Asian, petite, 5’2”, and the passenger of a white SUV or car. It is believed the female is not working alone.
Kamloops RCMP issued a statement today (Dec. 29, 2022) reminding the public that scammers are very believable but lawyers or any other professional agency will never request to meet to pick up cash in a parking lot, a restaurant, a park or at their residence.
The Kamloops RCMP General Investigation Support Team, Crime Reduction Unit and frontline officers are investigating the offences. Anyone with information is asked to call the Kamloops RCMP non-emergency line at 250-828-3000.
