Re: Mel Rothenburger’s Nov. 15 editorial, ‘It won’t matter who becomes new Green leader; the party is done’

The Green Party of Canada remains an established and credible option for voters seeking an alternative from an entrenched two-party system that doesn’t reflect their values.

Green Party policies provide voters with a distinct choice from the three other national parties, particularly with respect to climate change and democratic reform.

Other political parties promise action on climate change, but when they form government, they fail to follow through with meaningful action. Justin Trudeau’s Liberals and John Horgan’s NDP are just the two latest examples of this.

The Green Party is distinguished by its sincere commitment to implementing meaningful climate change policies to address the worsening climate crisis. Decades of denial then delay prove that the Liberals and the NDP may promise climate action, but they are unwilling to implement the policies needed to prevent environmental catastrophe.

The Green Party is also the only political party dedicated to democratic reform. Justin Trudeau lied about changing the electoral system, reversing his position as soon as his party formed government in 2015.

The provincial NDP in B.C. and Alberta both failed to enact any reforms to the electoral system when they finally formed government. The Conservatives are committed to the first-past-the-post electoral system as their only hope of electing governments with a minority of voters.

None of these parties support electoral reform as it would prevent them from forming majority governments with increasingly shrinking minorities of eligible voters. Only the Green Party of Canada has a commitment to proportionally elected governments as one of their core principles.

If you are dissatisfied with the two-party system and want meaningful change to how Canada is governed, and if the Green Party’s six core principles (available at greenparty.ca) resonate with you, consider supporting the Green Party. Email kamloops-thompson-cariboo@greenparty.ca to join us!
