POLICE – Man goes missing in river near McArthur Island, presumed drowned

A man went missing in the Thompson River near McArthur Island Park on Saturday (July 30, 2022) when he was swept away in the current and did not resurface.

At about 5:30 p.m., Kamloops RCMP received a report that a man had entered the river and went under. Witnesses tried to rescue him but were unable to reach him, and several boats in the area also responded but were also unable to find him.

An extensive search was conducted by Kamloops Fire and Rescue along with the RCMP.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team will assist in further attempts at recovery.

RCMP reminded the public that the currents in the river are unpredictable and the riverbed contains many sudden drop-offs — caution should be exercised and PFD’s worn when around moving water.
