POLICE – One confirmed dead in Mount Paul ammonia leak

An ammonia leak at a Mount Paul Industrial Park business took the life today (May 26, 2022), police have confirmed.

The Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP Detachment and the Southeast District General Investigation Services are investigating the cause of the leak.

Around 10:30 a.m., police responded to the area of Sarcee Street East in the industrial park to assist Kamloops Fire and Rescue with a leak reported in the area. Traffic was redirected while nearby businesses were evacuated.

One person was transported to hospital from the initial incident but succumbed to his injuries. At least two more people were medically assessed at the scene.

“With public safety secured now, police will be conducting a parallel investigation to that of WorkSafe BC to establish what led to the fatal leak,” said Const. Crystal Evelyn.

The BC Coroner’s Service will also conduct an investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to please contact the Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP at 250-314-1800 and reference file 2022-17544.
