EDITORIAL – Liberal-NDP deal isn’t the scary socialist thing Tories say it is

An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

‘GOD HELP US ALL,’ tweeted interim Conservative leader Candice Bergen after yesterday’s news that the governing federal Liberals and the NDP have agreed to a “supply and confidence” arrangement.

The deal means the NDP will support the Liberals on all confidence votes in return for endorsing several key NDP objectives such as dental care and “continuing progress” on pharmacare.

According to the Tories, this amounts to “backdoor socialism,” “government by blackmail” and “vote buying.”

E-gads, that sounds scary.

  1. and just what is objectionable about cooperation toward mutually valued goals? Those two parties have always had significant overlap in their goals and philosophies, the major difference being the Liberals debt to big business.. only self blinded purists see cooperation and compromise as evil and immoral …. cooperation and compromise are the nature of human society….and of all relationships except hostility and domination ….

  2. Mel Rothenburgers comments on the supply confidence arrangement between the Liberals and the NDP not being backdoor socialism could not be further from the truth because it is socialism at it’s finest. If we haven’t learnt anything from the pandemic it should be that we need far more medical support systems in hospitals and senior care and not to have two parties make a deal that will determine new priorities that will cost money and take money away from where they need and should spend more money. The confidence arrangement is not what Canadians voted for and is pure socialism in action.

  3. I did I not think the Tories could slip lower in my estimation, but Ms Bergen just came out with a revelation of absurd ignorance and arrogance. How dare Trudeau help Canadian people?….
… The PC oppose anything that will help Canadian people. I am sure that if they ever formed government they would sell every asset to the lowest bidder. But 8 am sure they will never form government.

  4. again the tories reveal their bankruptcy. They will never form a majority, and yet would gladly form a coalition with any party…even the Bloc…. They regularly side with the Bloc to oppose .decent legislation
