Owner of pickup truck located and arrested by police

The registered owner of the pickup truck involved in the fatal collision on 1st Avenue this morning has been arrested.

Cpl. Jody Shelkie said today (Nov. 3, 2019) the investigation is in its infancy and that the man’s involvement in the collision is still under investigation.

First Avenue was still closed after the noon hour and was expected to remain closed for most of Sunday.

Kamloops RCMP are still asking for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.  Specifically, police would like to talk to a female who was on foot at the scene and left shortly after the accident occurred.

NOTE: The man was later released from custody.

EARLIER STORY: Two people are dead and two others in hospital after an early morning crash at 1st Avenue and Battle Street in downtown Kamloops.

Police were called to the scene of a motor vehicle collision at 1:40 a.m. today (Nov. 3, 2019).  The collision occurred between a car with four occupants and a pickup truck.

When officers arrived they found two occupants of the car were already deceased.  The other two occupants were taken to Royal Inland Hospital, one in life-threatening condition and the other with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the pick-up truck had left the area before police arrived.

As police continued their investigation, 1st Avenue was closed between Seymour Street and Nicola Street.  Battle Street was closed from 2nd Avenue to Lee Road.

“Due to the severity of this collision, our investigation could take most of the day,” said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie. “We thank motorists for avoiding this area and taking alternate routes.”

Kamloops RCMP ask anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them.  As well, if you were the driver of the pick-up or have any information about the driver, call 250-828-3000.
