EDITORIAL – Giving city councils control over handguns a very bad idea

An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU IS HALF RIGHT with his campaign promise on gun control.

The Liberal leader says, if re-elected, he’ll give municipalities the authority to ban handguns and will impose a nation-wide ban on so-called “assault rifles,” the best known of which is the AR-15.

A buy-back program would be part of the ban.

So far, so good. While mass shootings with semi-automatic weapons haven’t made their way to Canada with the frequency they occur in the U.S., both the Ecole Polytechnique and Quebec City mosque shootings were carried out with semi-automatics. Details of which rifles would be banned haven’t been worked out yet but there’s no need to wait for more mass shootings before taking action.

Where he falls short is on handguns, which are the weapon of choice in firearms deaths.

  1. How is banning hand guns going to stop crime nothing will change until you go after the gangs causing the problem.not once has trudeau or the mayor’s said anything about going after the real problem not legal gun owners

It might be interesting for you to do a bit of research, Mel, and find out if any sitting Liberal MLAs or MPs have the RPAL (restricted PAL) which allows them to legally own and use handguns and restricted long guns such as the “military style” rifles pictured for people to see.

It would then be interesting to find out if they support the route by the Federal Liberal Party concerning gun control.

I would be interested to find out that information, Mel. Start locally if you’d like with the 2 Liberal MLAs in Kamloops i.e. Peter Milobar and Todd Stone.
