“IT WAS A SHORT PEACE in a terrible war.”
These were the remarks of Alfred Anderson, a Scottish veteran, recounting the events of the Christmas Truce of 1914. This unofficial truce saw roughly 100,000 German and British troops in the Belgium Front temporarily cease fire in the spirit of the holiday.
In some instances, carols were sung between the opposing forces, as well as exchanges of alcohol, food, tobacco, and other cultural trinkets. It was a beautiful moment in history that showcased the true humanity behind the speeches and the bloodshed and should never be forgotten.
In less than a week it will be time to put minute priorities on pause for a moment of silence on Remembrance Day. There are many ways to pay tribute to our brave troops like wearing a Poppy or attending one of the many ceremonies available to pay your respects.
On Nov. 10 at Memorial Hill Park (174-300 Battle Street) there will be a special event in honour of the 100th anniversary to the end of the 1st World War (1914-1918). The event runs from 11 a.m. to 12 noon and features key speakers on the history of the Kamloops Cenotaph and Cairn, including its 2016 restoration, as well as the true personal story of the pivotal Battle on Hill 70.
Nov. 11 is the Annual Remembrance Day Ceremony and Parade, which will be starting in Riverside Park at 10:30 a.m. Current and active duty members from many different organizations will be marching, so your support is always very much appreciated.
To pay your respects sooner, make sure to donate and grab a poppy from one of the many businesses that have donation boxes by the till. This great campaign is run by the Royal Canadian Legion and donations go to veterans and youth programs each year. Wearing your poppy is an excellent way to show veterans that they have not been forgotten.
No matter how you can show you care, this November be sure to remember the sacrifices our veterans made and support the cause whenever and however you can.
