AJAX – ‘Prevent all future mining projects within 10 km. of communities’
Notice of motion by Coun. Dieter Dudy to be discussed at the next meeting of Kamloops City Council:
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA) and the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) lobby the Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources and the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy to amend the Mines Act of B.C. and other relevant articles of legislation to prevent all future mining projects from being initiated within 10 km. of the municipal growth boundary of established communities.

Thats pretty pointless, the Provincial Govt will never agree to this, unless there is hidden language deep inside, that says they can back out of it on a case by case basis.

Our council is closed for business? Another ridiculous move to prevent industry or a good business opportunity that should have been approved already! Someone must have told council not to count Ajax out quite yet! Now please correct me here if this info is not true, but was the Ajax / Tech mine not operating long before the city limits encroached on that mine? And NewGold was built within city limits? You can tax people all you want to pay for the city’s infrastructure and councillors wages but we all need somewhere to work that makes more than an entry level tourism job. Consider the taxes these businesses pay and the money these employees spend here in Kamloops to support the businesses that are here? Perhaps we are already smoking what they want to grow at the airport!

The City applied unsuccessfully to expand its boundaries to annex New Gold.

But then they realised NG has a set budget and doesn’t have money to pull out of the sky to pay them and then there’s the fact that the mine only has 4 years left….not to mention they would have to clear roads and run a bus our there even after the mine closes. I like how the city wants to pick and choose what mine they want tax dollars from.
