FEATURED COMMENT – City council has no idea of problems faced by public
A Facebook comment on Bill McQuarrie’s column, ‘Creative thinking a good way to get shut down by City council,’ Jan. 30, 3018.
Usually I find that I disagree with Councilman Cavers, but in this case, he was spot on in asking for a review of the snow clearing procedures of the city crews.
And I find it appalling what happened to his motion. This council, including the new members, have little or no idea of the problems faced by the public when city crews clear snow. Bus riders have to trample though high snow banks created by the crews to get to the buses.
Now, having said that, the crews have been clearing pathways through the snow at bus stops, but it took a long time to get started on them and then, only after many complaints but the public. A review is needed, and not only regarding snow removal.
A review of council will definitely take place at the next election. Comments by councillors that people with disabilities can take cabs or have things delivered is obiously stated without the knowledge of the finances of the handicapped. They simply can’t afford to call cabs every time they need to go out after a heavy snowfall. That’s what transit is for.
As for taxis, have councillors ever had to wait for a cab, especially during a snowfall. Really, councillors, you have been elected to represent the public and deal with the problems, not find excuses.

Snow removal is only one of the many lingering problems facing us. The largest of which is the total absence of a backbone for most people on council. They need to be like the most effective of boards of directors, actively overseeing management activities. But especially, the mayor chair has been occupied for far too long by ineffective and condescending arses.
