AJAX – Mine project application now in the hands of B.C. cabinet ministers
The Ajax open-pit copper mine application is now in the hands of the two provincial cabinet ministers who must make a decision on whether B.C. supports the proposal. The B.C. Environmental Assessment Office said today (Nov. 20, 2017) it has finished up the review of the KGHM Ajax application and has referred it to Minister of Environment George Heyman and Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources Michelle Mungall.
Here is the statement from the B.C. EAO:
The Environmental Assessment Office has completed the Application Review phase for the proposed Ajax Mine Project. The Environmental Assessment Office has referred KGHM Ajax Mining Inc’s Application for an Environmental Assessment Certificate to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy and the Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources for a decision. In accordance with the Environmental Assessment Act, Ministers have up to 45 days to decide whether to issue a certificate, not issue a certificate, or require further assessment. Referral materials and the Ministers’ decision will be posted on the EAO website following the Ministers’ decision.

This has been the worst Environmental assessment boondoggle I have ever witnessed and been part of .Right from the start six plus years ago.I don’t believe the CAG was ever satisfied that the process was rigorous or comprehensive.I believe that short of stopping the project completely because of potential and absolute inaccuracies,in the application,that finally ,a full panel review similar to the one the SSN completed must be started.It must be rigorous (honest) and comprehensive from start to finish,with the wishes of First Nations playing a definitive roll in the process.
