POLICE – Tracking dog Fargo gets his man after brawl in the bushes

A 22-year-old suspect will appear in court Nov. 14 after a man tried to evade the police in a vehicle and on foot.

A Kamloops RCMP officer saw a vehicle travelling eastbound on Valleyview Drive at an “extremely” high rate of speed at 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Cpl. Jodie Shelkie said the officer turned on his emergency lights in an attempt to pull the vehicle over but the driver sped up.  As the vehicle went around a corner the driver lost control, crossed into the opposing lane, went over the curb, across two lawns and three driveways before coming to a stop.  The driver then got out of the vehicle and ran away.

The officer called Kamloops RCMP Police Dog Services and the canine unit tracked him to the parking lot of a business on the East TransCanada Highway, where the police dog found him hiding in some bushes.

“The suspect punched at the police dog but the dog quickly subdued him and pulled him out of the bushes.  The suspect was then arrested by the officers without incident.”

The suspect was treated at a local medical facility for injuries he received from the police dog.  The police dog, Fargo, did not suffer any injuries from the suspect punching him.

It was found that the man was prohibited from driving, the vehicle did not have insurance and the wrong plate was on the vehicle.  In addition to these offences under the Motor Vehicle Act, the suspect is facing charges under the Criminal Code of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Flight from Police.
