ROTHENBURGER – Saga of KDN property not as screwed up as it seems
THE SAGA of the Kamloops Daily News building isn’t City Hall’s finest hour.
One might get the impression, in fact, that MBA programs won’t be including it in their curriculums as a case study in how to meld politics, business and public engagement into a result that works for all.
However, it wasn’t as big a screw-up as it seems on the surface. True, City Hall came up with craps, but it was at least as much a matter of bad luck and circumstances as anything else.

The city should have left well enough alone to begin with, and left tax dollars in the bank instead of buying this white elephant .

The downtown needs a comprehensive long term vision (actually the whole city does) and needs to be maintained, daily, to higher standards from the present.
Parking also needs better planning. The plan should include a thorough inventory, a unified paying methodology and possibly an app to coordinate it so that users can easier spot available stalls. I am not sure the general taxpayer owes the downtown merchants enough parking for their employees.
Downtown businesses themselves, certainly with help from the City, need to plan employees “get to work” strategy. Said strategy should consider getting to work on foot, by bicycle, or car share or take the bus.
The patrons of the downtown also need to realize parking availability right in front of their preferred locations will always be very limited.
At this point, because the lack of a well defined “road map” anything coming from City Hall is inherently a screw-up…no need to invoke bad lack nor circumstances.
