Community mailboxes on way to Kamloops as Canada Post to end door-to-door delivery

These will become a common sight in Kamloops next year.

NEWS — Kamloops residents will be picking up their mail a little further from home by next year, as Canada Post announced today (Thursday) the end of door-to-door delivery in the city.

The decision wasn’t unexpected, as Canada Post announced a year ago it would phase out doorstep delivery across the country as a cost-saving measure, but the date for replacing it with community mailboxes in Kamloops was an unknown — until today.

Canada Post says the post office’s business “is in decline” and savings must be found.

About 23,000 homes will be affected by the change. Locations for the community mailboxes will be decided over the next several months, which means the change won’t take effect until next year.

Municipalities have complained about lack of consultation and have objected to the move but phasing out door-to-door deliver began last year and is to continue over the next five years.

Objections have also come from seniors, but Canada Post says it will work with people who have mobility issues to make sure they can get their mail. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says the post office should look for ways in increase service and revenues, instead of cutting service.

I find it funny how 2 parties are promising to get rid of these boxes, across the country, and replace them with door-to-door carriers.
You know what the cost of that would be ?
Gee…think I smell an election in the air.
