Bridge fun will gear up on April 20

Commuters, mark Monday, April 20 in your calendars — that’s the day when things get crowded on the Overlanders Bridge.

As of that day, the Tranquille Road off ramp will be closed for work on the Fortune Drive overpass. The City will also close the southbound curb lane for sidewalk construction. That won’t affect the on ramp as work will be taking place only on the bridge deck rather than on the ramp itself, so access onto the bridge from the north end should be fine, but means a reduction from four lanes to three. And that may be further reduced to two in fairly shot order.

The overpass will be closed for a month, forcing motorists to turn left from Fortune Drive on Leigh Road if they want to get to the Tranquille business district.

The overall project will take longer — much longer, until October. As the $10.3-million project hits high gear, motorists are expected to start avoiding Overlanders Bridge by taking a lengthy detour via the old Red Bridge or the Yellowhead Bridge. The City is doing some noodling on how to keep traffic moving through those detours as well.

The bridge work was approved 10 months ago and includes $3.3 million to repair the original sidewalk, and resurfacing of the bridge deck.

  1. No big deal if the Singh Street Bridge was in place. How long ago was it suggested?

I am sure that those working on the Overlanders Bridge, Columbia Street upgrade and a possible new Arts Centre in the future will do a great job on these projects. However, on the other side of the ledger, who is going to pay for all this. Maybe someone would mind telling me where our tax base is. Would be very helpful if we had a tax base to pay for all of these big ticket items. Hopefully, our city fathers are not expecting the property owners to pay for all of this.
