LETTER — Government has no business in teachers’ pro D

LETTER — I strongly disagree with Fassbender’s announcement yesterday, and agree with the sentiments of the following post I just read: “The teachers added those five days on voluntarily. They paid for them. You have no business in them.

“I want you to stand up and say out loud that the parents of B.C. want fully funded schools. I want you to stand up and say that the parents of B.C. want your party to cease undermining public education. I want you to understand that parents see the teacher’s action last year as… a very good lesson in standing up to bullies.

Fassbender.

Fassbender.

“When are you going to stand up in the Legislature and represent me, my fellow parents and the teachers who deserve your undying respect?

“Please reply with a PERSONAL and THOUGHTFUL response.

“Are all you B.C. Liberals really in line with these policies? Are you victims of groupthink or are you reined in by party discipline? Bought and sold a long time ago? I don’t expect an answer on that. That’s just for you to think on.”

CLARE SLADDEN

EDITOR’S NOTE: Education Minister Peter Fassbender announced yesterday a bill that would give the B.C. government more authority over teachers’ professional development. Five of six non-instructional days each year are professional-development days for teachers.

  1. This recent effort to stoke public animosity toward teachers is probably motivated by Premier Clark’s lackluster performance and the absence of leadership imagination. Nothing new or solid on your mind, like child poverty, homelessness, the rape of our water resources, native land settlements, the decline of our cancer agency, big-city transit, etc., etc.?
Good! Bash the teachers, cut the schools’ budgets and imply that teachers are playing hooky rather than trying to improve their strategies for kids.
Both morally and intellectually bankrupt! And mean!

Bash the teachers, an easy and good strategy as you pointed out, to “pretend” the provincial government is moving forward with “something” and…do not forget to not “hog” that left lane…
There is involution not evolution in BC. Sad, truly sad.
