Letter — What can we do about speeding on Westsyde Road?

LETTERRe: speeding on Westsyde Road and conversation with City traffic technician.

I contacted him initially because I didn’t feel that there were enough 60 km/h signs along Westsyde Road, especially as you get further out and also speeding at the school zone at David Thompson elementary.

A sign road for a speed limit to sixtyI was impressed that they suggested and followed through with a portable speed reader on Westsyde Road just after Harrington Road. It is very frustrating when I see the vehicles speeding as soon as the lanes go from two lanes to one right past Harrington — they accelerate and go a rediculous speed.

The City of Kamloops feels like a sufficient amount of 60 km/hr signs have been put up on Westsyde Road and don’t feel like it would actually make a difference. Since this is the first time (that I know of) that a portable speed reader has been put in that location on Westsyde Road I am wondering what else we could do to reduce the speed along that road. I have just recently noticed those little yellow signs that have “Slow down children playing” on them and will be picking one up from BCAA.

I really think that even if a police officer parked their car in that new strata complex just after Harrington Road, they would pull over quite a few speeders in a short amount of time. I have never seen a police officer parked there or around that area and I believe it would be beneficial. I see police officers closer to town driving on Westsyde Road, but rarely do I see any as you get further into Westsyde.

There will be more houses built further down on Westsyde Road just past the golf course and as the houses go up, more families will be affected by the speed.

They could put a 60 klik sign every 5 feet on Westsyde Rd and the same on many other roads and it wouldn,t do a damned thing. Heavier fines and the yanking of more than a few licences would do wonders. We need photo radar back and more cops but not the RCMP.We need a highway patrol agency that does nothing but monitor our roads and those using them.I see a great deal of bad driving of every description and we have because of inadequate policing a state of anarchy on the roads .Almost all traffic accidents are not accidents. They are the result of speed, impatience, lack of consideration for others and a lack of skill that takes years to aquire. Some of our young lady drivers are the worst offenders.
Being killed or badly injured in vehicle accidents is all to prevalent .It,s time for our new Highways minister to get serious, not pander to whoever lobbies for higher speed limits.

  2. Even if there isn’t construction on Westsyde Rd., as there is right now, I’ve set the cruise control for 60 m.p.h. & have people riding my bumper or zooming by me on the inside lane. Speeding has been an ongoing problem for decades that only more police presence will, not stop, but at least slow down.

Big wide roads are conducive to speeding, therefore road design is an issue for sure.
I will gladly re-introduce photo radar.
