Should there be limits on council terms?

NEWS/ CIVIC ELECTION 2014 — Should there be a limit on the number of years someone can serve on City council?

Should City council meetings be held in the evening?

How many signatures is enough?

A limit on terms?

Those are two of the questions on a Kamloops Voters Society online survey that wraps up on Wednesday. The survey asks questions about the election process and about current issues and the future of the community.

The question on term limits asks if council members should be allowed to serve a maximum of eight years, which would equate to two terms under the new four-year terms that come into effect this year.

The question on evening meetings is a reference to the current practice of Tuesday afternoon council sessions starting at 1:30, which some people believe reduces the ability of the public to attend.

Among other questions are the kiosk parking system in downtown Kamloops and the effect of closing down Stuart Wood elementary school. Results from the survey will be released Oct. 20.

Based on responses, the KVA will write a questionnaire for candidates. The questions and answers will be posted on the KVA website Nov. 3.

The survey, which takes a few minutes to complete, is at KVS Survey — Voter Feedback or

  1. 2 terms may be sufficient for most. Actually, one or half one should be sufficient for most of what we have seen so far. On the other hand, if we get someone really good (if ever that happens) then we should do our best to keep him/her around.

  2. Absolutely, there should be a 2 term limit on councilors. This shouldn’t be a career choice as one or two of them have made it. And yes, council meetings should be held when it is convenient for the most people to attend, and do away with ” in camera ” meetings, except for the very odd instance where they ” might ” be needed. And don’t get me started on those useless kiosks, please.
