Sixth annual World Rivers Day
COMMUNITY — The City of Kamloops will celebrate the 6th Annual Kamloops World Rivers Day on Sunday, Sept. 28, near the water park at Riverside Park. The event aims to increase awareness on water-related issues.
World Rivers Day, in conjunction with Culture Days, is a free family event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be multiple entertainers, musicians and arts and crafts. There will also be free face painting and a bouncy castle for the kids. A tree will be planted in honour of World Rivers Day and a Shoreline Cleanup will take place after 11 a.m.
Additionally, throughout the day there will be various activities and interactive games for the whole family, such as the opportunity to make your own personalized button. Everyone will have opportunities to take home water-saving gadgets and the chance to “fish” for prizes.
Booths will be set up by local not-for-profit agencies and businesses to share information on how they support the environment and promote sustainability within the community.
Participating organizations include the B.C. Wildlife Park, Big Little Science Centre, City of Kamloops arborists, City of Kamloops ECOSmart, City of Kamloops Integrated Pest Management, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Kamloops Dragon Boat Club and Wildsafe B.C.
The event began in 1980 when Mark Angelo founded B.C. Rivers Day. In 2005, the event expanded to World Rivers Day. Close to 100,000 people will participate in B.C. alone.

This week is also Great Canadian Shoreline Clean up. Starting last Saturday teams of volunteers have been walking all of our beaches picking up trash. This is the Third Year that the Kamloops Geocaching group and the Staff from the Real Canadians Superstore have done this. Tonight at 4:00 til dusk we will be cleaning up the beach alongside Schubert Drive. The clean up is open to the public. The Great Canadian Shoreline Clean up is celebrating it’s 20th year and sponsored by The Vancouver Aquarium, World Wildlife Federation and Loblaws of Canada.
