Labour council endorses candidates
NEWS/ CIVIC ELECTION 2014 — The Kamloops & District Labour Council has endorsed four candidates for Kamloops City council and one for school board trustee.
The labour council endorsed Dieter Dudy, Peter Kerek, Dustin McIntyre and Glen Thompson for election to City council. It also endorsed Adam Jensen for school trustee.
The KDLC met with candidates and also was provided with candidates’ answers to questions on labour issues including the living wage policy, public-private partnerships, contracting out, and transit.
“We wanted to support the candidates who understand the concerns of working people and are willing to advocate for them at council or school board,” said Barb Nederpel, 1st vice-president of the labour council.
“We may not always agree on all issues, but we feel confident that those candidates we’ve endorsed are committed to an open and respectful dialogue with the labour council over the next four years,” she added.
“The labour council, of course, welcomes the opportunity to meet with all councillor and trustee candidates to engage in discussion on municipal and educational issues,” said Nederpel, saying the dialogue should go beyond just the endorsed candidates.
The KDLC’s endorsement process will continue up to election time, and will accept applications from any other candidates for council, school board or TNRD positions who may want endorsement, she said.

Generally speaking….this is the kiss of death. How many Labour Council endorsed candidates actually get elected?

Jackson; three council candidates were endorsed in 2008 and all three were elected (Walsh, Spina, Bepple), one council candidate was endorsed in 2011 and he was elected (Cavers). The correlation between KDLC’s endorsement and subsequent election is somewhat less for positions of Mayor and school trustee.

Nice to see that the Labour Council has endorsed these particular people, now how many of the membership actually get out to vote on election day in Kamloops.
