Chamber to videotape responses from civic candidates

CIVIC ELECTION 2014 — Candidates running in the upcoming municipal election will have a new way of getting their messages across, and voters will have a new way of receiving them.

“We will be videoing the responses of each of the candidates and posting them online,” said Brant Hasanen, municipal campaign issues task force chair for the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce.

“Our chamber members and the general public will have access to view the responses, which may go a long way in determining the outcome of this year’s civic election.”

Chamber president Aleece Laird said members have been consulted over the past two months to develop questions for the candidates.

Questions being posed to the candidates will be:

1. Working with other councillors, City staff and the community, what steps or actions will you take to move the City of Kamloops toward stronger fiscal accountability?

2. In viewing Kamloops as a vibrant business community, what actions or steps will you take to enhance business attraction programs and opportunities for the city to achieve goals in such areas as creating greater economic diversity and depth; enhancing business practices; and promoting growth opportunities for existing businesses?

3. How will you work to create greater community engagement in City management for and with your constituents such as: getting more input into development; marketing; arts and other aspects of community building?

Candidates’ responses will be available to view as they are recorded, starting Oct. 1. Videos will be posted at http://www.kamloopschamber.ca with links from various media websites.

  1. Any questions to or about the owner of the most land in the city limits?

Good for the Chamber of Commerce for taking up this unique challenge. Will be listening with bated breath to the outcome. Hope that this does not take away from all-candidate forums. Which in turn hopefully, will not be a one issue presentation. Keep up the good work.
