Opening ceremonies will run from 11 a.m. to noon at the Rotary Bandshell, which will also be the venue for evening entertainment from 6 to 10:30 p.m.

Art in the Park and the performing stage at the east end of Riverside Park and the Interior Savings Centre Plaza will be ongoing from 9 a.m. until late afternoon, while ethnic food and cultural displays will be 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Artists of all kinds will shine at Art in the Park, the largest arts event in Kamloops. More than 90 artists will have handcrafted and original work on display, including Doug Flach/ Dragonworks (sculpture), Jason Gill (metal- wood wind chimes) and Judy Mackenzie (painting) as well as first-time exhibitors like young artist Bailey Koopmans (original prints, buttons and magnets), Kate Pearce (fine arts/ fashion) and Alanna Westermann (upcycled jewelry).

The arts council’s stage will feature entertainment for all ages, including children’s entertainer Kiki the Eco elf, Banat Tariq (bellydance), Doc & the Disorderlies (blues. rock), the KAC’s Rivertown Players (children’s theatre) and demos by the Society for Creative Anachronism.

The arts council is also inviting people to take part in its photo contest. Post a photo taken at Riverside Park on July 1 that involves some aspect of art on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #ArtInThePic, and you could win a paint splatter party from 4Cats Arts Studio.

A civic delegation from Kamloops’ sister city, Uji, Japan, will  visit for several days before and after Canada Day.

  1. Hi Mel! There will also be a classical performance by the Brandenburg community orchestra & the Chamber Musicians of Kamloops. Music starts at sundown 9pm and goes to 10:30pm. You’ll see the orchestra right along the riverside. They will be in 18th Century period costume and will be playing classical music, including Handel’s fireworks when the actual fireworks begin at 10pm. Please spread the word about this, as it will be a memorable & photo worthy performance. It will be an exciting day at Riverside Park from start to finish!
