Request for trail to Tournament Capital Ranch faces obstacles

NEWS/ CITY — A proposed 14 km trail along the Yellowhead Highway may be a low priority for spending, says City engineering services director Marvin Kwiatkowski.

slo-pitchThe trail was proposed in March by the Kamloops Tournament Ranch Trail Committee to connect the Tournament Capital Ranch slo pitch/ rugby complex to the Halston Bridge.

It would be 14 km. — a 45-minute bike ride — and would cost in the neighbourhood of $2 million.

Kwiatkowski says in a report going to council Tuesday there are several jurisdictional approvals and challenges including crossing Tk’emlups Indian Band land plus some steep grades and rocky terrain.

The trail probably would not be heavily used by people travelling to the complex, he says and it is too far for family trips with young children.

“Due to the length of the trail and the travel distance from origin, it is not likely that the trail will have heavy use by those who are using the sports facilities at the TCR on a regular basis.”

Kwiatkowski says the Trails Master Plan has about 40 high- to medium-ranking projects still not completed, including parts of the Rivers Trail, Peterson Creek Park and Kenna Cartwright Park.

A feasibility study on various aspects of the trail would cost about $50,000

  1. Probably a good thing , as anything to do with the city that is forecast at a couple of million dollars, ends up being 5 or 6 million over budget somehow.
