Open house on West Highlands Park
NEWS/ CITY — The public will get a chance to look at concept plans for the new West Highlands Park in Aberdeen and provide input on what amenities should be in the final design.
An open house will be held Wednesday, June 11, in the community room at Aberdeen elementary from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. City staff will be on hand to share ideas and consider input on the 14-hectare park.
West Highlands Park used to be Aberdeen Highlands Golf Course. An open house on the park concept two years agree drew 100 residents.
Amenities in the park will include: two playing fields; renovations of the existing clubhouse building for use as a community hall; expansion of parking spaces; a 1.7 km multi-use path; preservation of the existing pond; and rest stops overlooking both river valleys. Most of the park is intended to be naturalized to minimize water use and maintenance.
Anyone unable to attend but still wanting to provide input can fill out a comment form on the City of Kamloops website at http://www.kamloops.ca/parks/westhighlandspark.shtml.

Mel, not that I have an issue with anti ajax comments, but they really have no place in this article as it has nothing to do with Ajax or mining. Could we keep the comments about the topics at hand?

Respectfully, Tyler, in my opinion, anti-Ajax comments do have a place here. The proposed West Highlands Park will be within spitting distance of the proposed Ajax mine, and to me, the connection is obvious (and ominous). A map showing both proposed developments would really make the relationship blazingly obvious (wish I had that). In all other cases, I would agree with you — anti-Ajax comments belong only on obviously Ajax-themed news items — but this one story seems to cry out for Ajax-related commentary due to the spatial relationship of the two proposed (and thematically-opposed) developments.

I agree with this comment 100%. The Ajax comments on this story made complete sense to me, and I agree with them as an Aberdeen resident.

Pretty much this:
This was a planned explosion in Malartic, Quebec (Osisko open-pit gold mine). Note the nice playground in the foreground. Kamloops leadership, grab a brain…

Cognitive dissonance…..large open pit mine and new sports, rec and green space. Ugh.

OMG!
Have you not been told? They (city council) are waiting for the environmental assessment process – or as our esteemed premier would say the environmental improvement process!. :)
Only then can our taxpayer funded politicians actually deign to understand that this open pit, industrial, taxpayer subsidized behemoth might possibly affect our city’s inversion bound airspace, densely packed population centre and long term sustainability!
Heaven forefend that our elected leaders connect the dots…….
LOL – C.D. indeed.
It’s like smoking organically grown cigarettes. They just don’t get it.

Always nice to have another City park. Has there been any word if this will be a dog friendly park?
