Kamloops teachers’ next strike June 13

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANEWS/ SCHOOLS — Kamloops teachers will be back on the picket line one week from today.

The schedule released for week three of rotating strikes shows the Kamloops-Thompson School District on the list for Friday, June 13. Prince George, South Okanagan Similkameen and Revelstoke are among the other districts scheduled for that day.

As with the past two weeks, four days out of the five weekdays will be used for rotating strikes. Greater Victoria is the only district to be struck on Tuesday, June 11, with Wednesday and Thursday also on the list.

“B.C. teachers remain committed to negotiating a fair and reasonable deal that provides better support for our students,” B.C. Teachers Federation president Jim Iker said late Thursday.

“It’s time for Premier Christy Clark to provide the employer with new funding that will help bring the two sides closer together on class size, composition, staffing levels for specialist teachers, and wages.”

Teachers will vote Monday and Tuesday on whether to escalate to a full-scale strike.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the government’s goal continues to be “a lasting, negotiated settlement.” He said class size and composition are on the table.

“A full strike is only going to keep more students out of their classrooms, create more disruption for parents, while teachers and support workers caught in the middle will lose even more in wages.”
