Library system to host literacy workshops
NEWS — The TNRD Library System will host a series of free literacy workshops for families at the North Kamloops Library starting May 26 and continuing through June.
The “3 Steps to Literacy” workshops are divided into three categories: Discover Your Library, First Steps to Reading, and Read! Read! Read! Attendees are welcome to attend any or all of the sessions.
Dates and times are:
Discover Your Library (for everyone, 10:15-11:15 a.m.).
Monday, May 26: Focus on adult services.
Monday, June 2: Databases, audio-visuals and free Internet options.
Monday, June 9: Focus on children, tweens and teens.
First Steps to Reading (for parents, 6:30-7:30 p.m.)
Tuesday, May 27: Storytelling Basics, hosted by Andy Finnen, head of children’s services at North Kamloops.
Tuesday, June 3: Encouraging your child’s emergency literacy, with Connie Alger and Cindy Piwowar from TRU Early Childhood education.
Tuesday, June 10: Getting Back to Basics, and why playing with our children is important, with Janis Arner, an early childhood educator.
Read! Read! Read! (for parents and children, 3-4 p.m.)
Thursday, May 29: Simple strategies to help your child be a successful reader, with Fiona Clare, Literacy in Kamloops.
Thursday, June 5: Preparing children for school or daycare, with Janis Arner, Kamloops, YMCA-YWCA Child Care Resource and Referral program.
