Sandman opening awaits work on stairs
NEWS — The new Sandman Signature Hotel is still behind schedule but could be ready for an opening in another couple of weeks.
In the meantime, chief building inspector Kundan Babbar is expecting a request for a partial occupancy permit for the hotel’s Shark Club bar and grill a little sooner so staff can be brought in and get it ready for business.
Bubbar told The Armchair Mayor News today his department hasn’t yet received a request for inspection of the hotel itself.
“We’ll schedule a walk-through with their professional team” when the project is ready, he said.
One of the holdups is a problem with the main stairs at the front of the building off Lorne Street. Bubbar said the rise-and-run of the stairs, which are located inside the front door, still hasn’t been corrected.
Rise and run refers to the height and stepping area of the stairway. The building code requires them to be consistent.
“There’s no way we can accept that. They’re not safe. They have to fix the stairs one way or another,” he said.
Since the stairs are constructed of concrete and tile, that could take some doing.
The land for the hotel was purchased in 2008.

I’ve had dealings with Kundan Babbar before, and have always found him ready , and willing to do the right thing when it is required. The problem is, he is too easily talked out of that by other staff in his department, who favor the wrong people.
