Interior Health Authority announced today Bird Construction was awarded the contract from among three pre-qualified candidates that were shortlisted last August.

The $79.8 million cost will be shared between the provincial government and the Thompson Regional Hospital District.

Construction is expected to start this spring and take two years to complete.

“I look forward to the emergence of an advanced facility that will improve patient access to services while laying the groundwork for future expansion at RIH, as outline in the master site plan,” said IHA chair Norman Embree.

Bird Construction will complete the final designs of the building and oversee construction.

Site preparation work has been underway since last fall after trees were cut down in front of the hospital. The entire slope in front of the hospital has been removed.

The new building will include expanded space for medial outpatient services, a clinical education program, the UBC medical school, 350 parking stalls and a pedestrian bridge connecting the new building to the hospital.
