Nobody against loan for N. Shore police office

NEWS — It’s unanimous — everybody wants a new North Shore community policing office and is willing to see $1.55 million borrowed to do it.

Screen Shot 2014-01-28 at 2.58.52 PMA report to City council on Tuesday says zero responses were received in the alternative approval process — also known as a counter petition — on a City plan to borrow the money. Major loans taken out by the City — such as for the Riverside Park parkade that was defeated a few years ago — are subject to the process.

The newest loan will allow purchase of the North Shore Kia dealership property and renovation of the building for satellite RCMP offices.

Renovations include an elevator, roof repairs, landscaping and mechanical/ electrical upgrades.

The property is located at 915 Seventh Street and part of 880 Eighth Street. The City has leased space at 789 Fortune Dr. for the North Shore policing offices for several years.

Deadline for presenting counter petitions was Feb.21. Ten per cent of electors, 6,836 residents, would have had to sign forms to stop the borrowing bylaw.

The move from the Fortune Drive location isn’t expected until the end of next year.
