LETTER – City’s post on Alternative Approval Process exaggerates

Dear Mayor and Council,
I am writing regarding the City’s recent communications on the Alternative Approval Process (AAP), including the recent Facebook post, which raises concerns about how the process is being presented.
The bulletin’s description of referendums as limited to those “who find time to vote” is misleading. Advance voting and other accessibility measures exist specifically to ensure broad participation. Presenting referendums this way risks giving residents an inaccurate understanding of their options.
At the same time, AAP is being promoted as more accessible yet participation still depends on residents being aware of the process and taking additional steps to respond. That makes clear, balanced communication essential.
If the City’s goal is to ensure meaningful public input, I ask that you:
• Include a postage-paid elector response form with any AAP mail-out
• Provide clear, plain-language information on financial impacts, including long-term costs, with full disclosure of un-redacted supporting reports.
• Allow and maintain public comments on Facebook posts so residents can ask questions and receive answers
• Ensure residents have a reasonable opportunity to understand and respond.
For major, long-term financial commitments, residents should be confident the approval process is both transparent and broadly accessible.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Garry Davies
Kamloops resident
