Kamloops Pride is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Muhammad “Ash” Zafar. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ash’s family, friends, and all community members grieving this profound loss.

This loss has resonated deeply with the local 2SLGBTQPIA+ community and we have heard sentiments of apprehension and caution within the community.

We would like to amplify the message that the Kamloops RCMP are urging caution on dating apps and “are still asking anyone who had contact with Mr. Zafar between Saturday evening and late Sunday to reach out to investigators,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Kevin McIntyre said. “This includes individuals who use men-seeking-men dating sites or apps and may have communicated with him or with someone using his images or profile information.”

Anyone with information about Zafar’s death can call police at 250-828-3000. We encourage members of the 2SLGBTQPIA+ community to prioritize safety when meeting people through online dating platforms. General safety reminders include, consider choosing a public place, arranging your own transportation, letting a trusted person know your plans, and checking in afterward.

Anyone who feels uncomfortable or unsafe is encouraged to leave the situation and to block or report concerning behaviour on dating platforms. No one should feel alone in their grief or in seeking connection. Kamloops Pride will continue advocating for a community where everyone is valued, supported, and treated with compassion.

We have compiled some resources for online dating safety at www.kamloopspride.com/resources-community.
