Police are seeking leads on a suspected arson that damaged Westmount elementary school early today (Oct. 26, 2025) and forced its closure for an extended period.
Students get the day off Monday and will be relocated to another school the following day.
Police are investigating after Kamloops Fire Rescue extinguished the flames at the school at 745 Walkem Rd.
“It appears that there was someone on the roof of the school when the fire broke out,” said Staff Sgt. Chris Kienzle. “The fire is believed to be intentionally set, and our investigation is ongoing.”
School District 73 stated in a press release that the school is closed until further notice and there will be no access for several weeks.
“As a result, Westmount students will not be in session tomorrow, Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, as District and school staff make a transition and relocation plan for students. Westmount parents have been asked to make alternate arrangements for the supervision of their children tomorrow.
“Westmount students will be relocated to a nearby school and return to class on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025. An update will be sent to staff and parents by tomorrow afternoon (Monday, Oct. 27, 2025) with further details on the next steps for the transition and relocation plans, including updates on transportation and supports for students.
“Further updates about Westmount Elementary School will be shared as they become available in the coming days and weeks.”
Anyone who witnessed or has information that may be related to this investigation is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and cite file 2025-35751.
