The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) FireSmart™ program will be offering free chipping day events for residents in East Barriere Lake, Neskonlith Lake, and Knouff Lake later this month.

  • East Barriere Lake: May 20, 2025
  • Neskonlith Lake (properties within TNRD Electoral Area “P”): May 22, 2025
  • Knouff Lake: May 31, 2025

Residents are encouraged to clear out brush, branches, deadfall, and trimmings, to reduce wildfire fuels and help mitigate the risk of wildfire. Residents are asked to place debris at the end of their driveway the night before pickup.

For easy pickup, residents should stack wood and have butt ends facing the road. Brush must be clean and free of dirt and rocks, and woody debris must be no larger than approximately five inches in diameter.

TNRD chipping day events are funded through the TNRD FireSmart™ program, which is an annual grant-funded program through the Province of BC.

Community groups within TNRD Electoral Areas interested in having a chipping day in their local area can contact TNRD FireSmart™ staff at 250-377-6326 or firesmart@tnrd.ca.

Residents are also reminded to take steps to FireSmart™ their own private property, which will significantly increase the chances of a home surviving a wildfire.

Throughout 2025, TNRD FireSmart™ staff will be conducting free home assessments, hosting or attending community events, hosting free chipping days, and making education materials available to support residents doing fire mitigation work at home. For more information, visit: tnrd.ca/firesmart.
