EDITORIAL – We must find the reason for ‘senseless’ attack at Filipino festival

Sene after car-ramming attack at Filipino festival.

 An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

AS CANADIANS head into an all-important federal election, they will be haunted by the scene of a black SUV speeding into a crowd of people at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver.

At this writing, the death toll has risen to at least 11, with many others injured. This act of mass murder is being called “senseless,” as such things often are. But, of course, “senseless” means having no purpose, and simply doesn’t apply, because there’s always a reason. Not a good or acceptable reason, but a reason.

So, why did the 30-year-old man suspected of this terrible carnage do such a thing? Was it an act of terrorism in the name of some misdirected cause? Was it a spontaneous reaction in response to a perceived insult? Perhaps racial hatred against the Filipino community?

In the immediate aftermath, it appears to be none of those. Police don’t suspect terrorism as the reason, and other possibilities don’t fit either.

There’s a clue, though, in the fact that the suspect was known to police via a “significant history of interactions” with healthcare professionals related to mental health. Which raises the distinct possibility that he suffered some sort of psychotic episode and simply went berserk.

Another possibility that can’t be ruled out is the one of sought-after notoriety. Some mass murderers want their names to go down in history.

It may seem crass speculation to wonder about motive so soon after so many people have been tragically affected but it’s an important analysis. Until we can stitch together a likely cause or motive, we won’t know how to go about preventing it from happening in future.

If it was mental derangement, all we can do is continue trying to make improvements to mental healthcare and, perhaps, implement some new protocols aimed at predicting disastrous outcomes. A daunting challenge indeed.

If was a case of seeking notoriety, we can stop publishing the names of suspects, thereby robbing them of exactly what they want.

Whichever it is, authorities must obviously review strategies for establishing protective measures at public events that involve large crowds. The Filipino festival was regarded as having a low level of threat of attack. That assessment turned out to be tragically wrong.

The reason is simply that Riverview was shut down by Gordon Campbell many years ago. He should never have been allowed a drivers licence,if he indeed had one or in any way allowed to drive.

It’s critical to have WHY discussed and analyzed at length for all of us, including the grieving families, injured, bystanders and community of Vancouver. Somehow, there has to be consequences.

Hours before the attack, a family member contacted the hospital psych ward due to the attacker’s deteriorating state. Is anyone surprised nothing happened?

Here’s a reason as good as any other: when progressive governments encourage open air asylums in our streets, shit happens.

Horrific events like this are assured so long as government refuses to lock people up for their behaviours. This is not the first time nor will it be the last. A horror show of our own making. A needless waste of innocence snuffed out. For what.

  4. Mel, we know the reason. We don’t accept it and don’t appear to even be trying but we do know the reason.

  5. Should’ve titled this article, “How not to blame the Liberals for this one.”

It’s going to be hard not to politicize this tragedy, but this did in fact happen 3 days before the election, where people will be voting mostly because they are sick and tired of hearing these stories about career “catch and release” offenders doing massive damage to the safety and welfare of the general public.

People want to make sense of this?…. It’s because of failed Liberal policies; it can’t get more simpler to understand than that. Yes, we need more services for mentally ill people, but does that mean we need to suffer their presence among us until something audaciously explosive happens and kills another dozen people?

Can a voting Liberal say with a straight face, to a relative of a victim of these people, “well if more people voted Liberal, the services would be there to help the offender and those dozen victims would still be alive.” Except we’ve been under a Liberal regime for a whole decade, and nothing has changed for the better. Why vote for the Liberals, on a fleeting idea that “maybe” they’ll do something this time around? Do Liberals actually believe they can keep the public on an endless blind curve of false promises for another term?

  6. We sure must know more (hopefully the media will tell us all of the details) why a person with a hefty record of interactions with “mental health professionals” and police was out and about…11 innocent people killed and likely more to come. And many more innocent people’s lives changed forever.
