POLICE – Axe-swinging, yelling resident apprehended, taken to hospital

The Kamloops RCMP Detachment responded to approximately 288 calls for service from Friday Jan. 24, 2025, to 9 a.m. on Monday Jan. 27. Below are some highlights from those reports.

Barricaded person safely apprehended

A report of a person running around while yelling and swinging an axe led to a large police presence Friday afternoon.

On Jan. 24, 2025, around 2:20 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers attended the 2100-block of Young Avenue in response to the report, which involved a person experiencing a mental health crisis. The person was located shortly after on Greenfield Avenue, barricaded inside a residence. The Southeast District Emergency Response Team attended to assist.

At about 7:45 p.m., the person surrendered and was safely apprehended under the Mental Health Act, then taken to hospital for medical assessment and care. The investigation is ongoing.

Weapons complaint

Two people were arrested for mischief and public intoxication in relation to a weapons report received Sunday afternoon.

On Jan. 26, 2025, around 2:20 p.m., multiple Kamloops RCMP officers responded to the 700-block of Fortune Drive, where a person was observed with what appeared to be a firearm in an alleyway. Police located two people nearby as part of the investigation and seized a bb-gun and a large knife.

Both were arrested for public intoxication and lodged in cells to sober up safely and prevent continuation. They were later released without process.

Overlander Bridge police presence

The northbound lane of the Overlander Bridge was temporarily closed Saturday afternoon while police responded to a person experiencing a mental health crisis.

On Saturday Jan. 25, 2025, just before 4:40 p.m., Kamloops RCMP were visible on the bridge, where, with the assistance of the Integrated Crisis Response Team, a person was safely apprehended under the Mental Health Act. The man or woman was taken to hospital for medical assessment and care.

The bridge was fully reopened shortly after.
