EDITORIAL – A tale of two very different concession speeches

An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.
THOSE WHO CLING to the notion that Donald Trump will make everything great again and save democracy should pay attention to a couple of very important political speeches made over the past two days.
One was the concession speech yesterday of Vice President Kamala Harris. The other was a very brief address today (Nov. 7, 2024) by President Joe Biden.
Both stand in stark contrast to what Trump would be saying if he’d lost Tuesday’s election. Both Harris and Biden were gracious, intelligent and hopeful, rooting their comments in the fact that democracy depends on acceptance of the voters’ will. Harris took time to thank those who worked for her and those who voted for her, and talked also about carrying on the fight for the ideals of the Democratic party.
But the most important thing she said had to do with handing over power to Trump. “We must accept the results of the election,” she said. There was no whining, no claims that the election must have been rigged.
Today, in much fewer words, Biden, too, talked about “the peaceful transfer of power.” He, too, offered assurance that the current administration will do all it can to make the transition to the Trump team smooth and effective. That’s their duty but it seems odd it should have to be stated that the transfer of power will be peaceful.
Yet that’s what Trump has brought the state of American democracy to. Imagine if he had lost. Do you think he would have respectfully accepted the results, say the people have spoken, and move on?
Well, consider that, on election night before it became clear he was the likely winner, he was busy spreading false stories of election fraud. There was, he claimed, massive cheating going on in Philadelphia, one of the key influencers in the overall result of the election. That claim was quickly debunked.
In fact, he spent the last four years insisting he was cheated out of the 2020 election and, during the campaign leading up to Tuesday, repeatedly emphasized alleged concerns about election fraud. His base took the same line.
If Trump had lost, those claims would have kicked into high gear. His concession speech would have been night and day to what Harris and Biden said. Instead of graciously conceding, he would have screamed to the heavens that he was robbed. There would have been no concession. And we can only imagine what his supporters might have done.
Interesting, isn’t it, that since Tuesday, there have been no claims from the Trump camp that there was widespread election fraud. No talk of fraud in Philadelphia or anywhere else. Their guy, after all, won, so it must have been fair.
This is not a man who puts democracy first. What a contrast between his narcissistic view of the world, and the manner in which Harris and Biden reaffirmed democracy with their pledge of a smooth transition and a “peaceful” transfer of power.

I guess by omission you can accuse me of double standard as I am not lambasting Trump. You miss the point as usual because I never supported Trump.
Many men celebrities, politicians, billionaires, and leading academics who are on Jeffrey Epstein’s client list supported the democrats. more so than the Republicans. Saying this does not make me a Trump supporter since I did not say he was on the list as well.
This overall crime, is all about men abusing women for a long period of time … and it’s only one person in jail – a woman. Harris a champion of women’s rights a prosecutor ignored this and went after Trump but not after Gates or Clinton or many others (Bilenda showed Gates the door but Hillary did not do the same to Bill).
The rich and powerful figures so far mentioned in the released court filings are not accused of any wrongdoing but Trump was convicted on the testimony of a porn star for an act supposedly done some 40 years ago.
Saying this does not make me a Trump supporter. I am asking the editor to deal with reality and truths, and you as well –provide your evidence and with the real possibilities of the development of society, and stop ignoring the roots of useful lies and propaganda which governments plant to silence those who continue to think and ask questions

I do have to support your POVs Walter. But I need to say that people are seemingly generally unconcerned with the truth unless it benefits them.

OMG I can’t believe you are saying: “vulgar, profane, repulsive, obscene and totally tasteless people” in speaking of what Harris people had on stage with her. Most people would use those descriptors when speaking of Trump’s vitriolic campaign speeches throughout the entire campaign.

In support of that Harris “movement”, numerous famous faces, from various social activities were abusive and vulgar , usually actors and actresses whose claim to fame is nudity with a pretense for knowledge of the world where pretense is their second nature. J.LO (Lopez) and Combs were together for several years but she remained silent over his arrest for sexual offences. The entire entertainment industry was anti Trump. Saying this does not make me a Trump supporter

Walter, it sounds like you have been taken in by Trump and his rhetoric. Maybe you should NOT be drinking the Kool Aid and start seeing what he is like and has done in the US and the world. I hope you don’t get affected too much by his far right thoughts and by his leaders who are giving him all the lies that he tells to spread to those who only want to hear and believe the lies that he tells. Wake up, Walter!!

The right of citizens to publicly express different narrative on the public stage has become a human right. The street is a public arena, a real one, which needs to be protected. Saying this about the Democrats is in relationship to what the Democrats have done Clintons, Obama, Pelosi and just as many Republicans as well does not make me a Trump supported. I never was . This article was about Harris. Biden’s policies during his lifetime and during Harris’s VP time is a blood stain on humanity.

Mr. George Is it Legitimate that People in the Streets Defend Themselves Against Injustice? In moments of uncovering big lies and deceptions, especially if you touch the zone between corruption and collaboration, the corporate barons with the help of the media make sure truth becomes the enemy of the state. Surrendering to injustice is a mindset of slaves.

Your crystal ball comment Mel when you say: “Both [Biden and Harris’s concession speech] stand in stark contrast to what Trump would be saying if he’d lost Tuesday’s election,” Democrats will spend the next few months explaining to the American people what they should have done instead of learning from the litany of lies that they told the American people. Just day or so before on stage with Harris were representatives of the most vulgar, profane, repulsive, obscene and totally tasteless people whose remarks came from the sick Hollywood entertainment industry that American people did not buy into. Who brought these people on stage and cheered for them say the vulgar things that they said. Forty seven percent of those who voted for Harris. The same ones now eating crow with platitudes fearing the wrath of Trump even before he is sworn into office. Take a look into your crystal ball to see if this will happen.

I completely agree that the platoon of celebrity reps the democrats recruited, as a whole, demonstrated they are “vulgar, profane, repulsive, obscene and totally tasteless people”, their remarks, for me personally, were off putting to say the least. The days of “when they go low, we go high” are obviously sadly over.
But you’re the pot calling the kettle black here as Trump and his battalion of sycophants are far greater, or should I say lower deviants in this type of behaviour. Your’e hypocrisy is self evident, maybe you need to be “grabbed by the pussy” unless there’s “blood coming out of her wherever”
