POLICE – Caution urged to avoid theft of pin numbers by scam artists

Kamloops RCMP are reminding the public to be extra aware of their surroundings when entering pin numbers, following recent theft and fraud reports.

The most recent report involved a person being distracted in a shopping centre parking lot, then having their wallet stolen on Aug. 20, 2024. Shortly after, money was withdrawn from their bank account, using the same pin number that had just been entered at check-out.

“Based on the investigation, it is believed the person was followed at the checkout and watched by someone who was spying for a pin number,” said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP Detachment spokesperson.

“In the parking lot, while loading their vehicle with the purchased items, a person distracted the victim while another person stole their wallet.”

Earlier in the summer, police received a report of a theft/fraud that also involved the use of a pin number, suspected to have been obtained when the victim used their debit card.

“Although it’s unknown if these incidents are connected in anyway, in both occurrences they involved the use of a stolen card, accompanied by a stolen corresponding pin number,” said Cpl. Evelyn. “Please always remember that not everyone behind you is trustworthy, even if they may look like they are. Making a habit out of covering up your pin number is a good way to help reduce being targeted by an opportunistic thief.”

In the Aug. 20 theft, the suspects were described as follows:

Male

  • Caucasian or fair skin
  • Approximately 6’0”
  • 250 to 275 lbs
  • Moustache and beard
  • Brown hair
  • Wearing a white shirt, shorts, and a camo ball cap

Female

  • Olive complexion
  • Slim, approximately 120 lbs,
  • 5’4″
  • Long dark hair, parted centrally
  • Wearing a white t-shirt with a black and white print of a face on it, and dark blue or black ankle length skirt.

Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to please contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-27423.

  1. Things are looking bad out here.

But thank goodness council members get personal security paid for by the generousity of the taxpayer, while the rest of us are out here facing the crime, theft, burglaries, assaults and disorder on the streets.

Thank goodness we have a top cop that minimizes the designation of Canada’s worst city for crime instead of admitting there’s a serious problem and presenting a plan to address it.

Thank goodness we have Kelly Hall, who told the top cop that being the #1 city for crime severity in Canada matters to no one in this city.

This is leadership. This is Kamloops.
