ELECTION ’24 – New Democrats pick candidate in Kamloops-N. Thompson

A human service advocate will represent the BC NDP in Kamloops-North Thompson in the October provincial election.

Riding resident Rick Turner announced today (Aug. 21, 2024) that Maddi Genn will be acclaimed as the party’s candidate at a nomination meeting Sept. 8.

“We are proud to have Maddi represent the party in Kamloops-North,” said Turner. “With her training and passion for social justice, she will represent the people of this constituency well in Victoria.”

Genn grew up in Salmon Arm, moving to Kamloops in 2016 to attend Thompson Rivers University where she completed a Human Services Diploma. Since graduating, she has been working one-on-one with at-risk youth and working with her union as a health and safety representative and chairperson.

She recently started a NextGen committee dedicated to ensuring that new and young workers have the tools they need to be successful at work.

“I have seen and I understand firsthand the struggles people and families have securing affordable housing and making ends meet,” Genn said.

“I’m proud of the work David Eby and his government have completed and I know there is much more to be done.”

She said her goal is to make Kamloops and the North Thompson “an affordable place to live, to improve healthcare accessibility, and increase safety. Together with communities we will continue to tackle the unregulated drug supply and related deaths crisis.”

She cited new schools in Valleyview and Parkcrest, expansion of Royal Inland Hospital, Spero House as well as housing initiatives and the future cancer centre as examples of the NDP government’s commitment to the area.

“We have accomplished a lot and there is more to do. We can’t risk losing what we have gained, and we can’t risk being thrown off track by John Rustad and Kevin Falcon.”

Other candidates in Kamloops-North Thompson include Todd Stone of BC United and Ward Stamer for the BC Conservatives.

  1. “I’m proud of the work David Eby and his government have completed and I know there is much more to be done.”

    Is that so?

Two families have launched a class action lawsuit against the NDP government’s disastrous safy supply program. One family’s daughter is alleged to have died from hydromorphone overdose. The other family’s daughter is addicted to hydromorphone.

“The unlimited supply of government-funded hydromorphone and other safe supply drugs increased the risk of addiction and led to more addictions,” said the B.C. Supreme Court notice of civil claim, filed Aug. 15. “Previously stable patients became more likely to suffer long-term consequences including overdose.”

Please, no more work from David Eby and the NDP.

  2. Ya … this is rough.

After many years of experience with them in govt, and then in opposition … I am very ‘just had enough’ with the United/Liberal soundbites, approach and political gamesmanship.

The recent surge in Conservative fortunes made me take a close look and pay attention to anything they say and put out, for quite a while now … and I’m not impressed. Way too many red flags and off comments. The only reason their numbers are surging, is because the United party is imploding … and no … no one is confused and thinking the Liberal Party changed its name to the Conservative party.

The incumbent NDP govt which I’m more or less ok’ish with on the whole, has again put an under powered, unknown face in the riding … as they know the chances of winning a seat here is basically non-existent. I’m sure she is very nice, but its a placeholder ticket.

… all this makes voting very difficult.

    – Vote NDP anyway and I just play the role of splitting the vote, benefitting either United or Conservative … probably Conservative in this riding.
    – Vote Conservative and I have to look in a mirror for 4 years, and quake at the thought of helping fill the seat with the party most likely to screw up our schools, housing, climate and reconciliation with First Nations portfolios.
    – Vote United … and … ya, I’m not doing that. Honestly, Mr’s Milobar and Stone need to cross the floor to the Conservatives if they want a job at all.

    Ya … this is rough.
