CANADA DAY – Two hundred drones will take to the sky to cap celebrations

Big tent keeps everyone cool for opening ceremonies and entertainment.

No, there won’t be any fireworks at this year’s Canada Day celebrations but a first-ever drone show will cap off the day instead.

Two hundred drones will take to the sky at dusk on Monday (July 1, 2024) with a Canada Day theme, weather willing. For the best experience, attendees are encouraged to watch the show from Rivers Trail in Riverside Park. The drone show is presented by the City of Kamloops and supported by the Kamloops Multicultural Society and Browns Locksmith/Ray’s Lock and Key.

Canada Day in the park will kick off with the Lions Club pancake breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Attendees are invited to the Rotary Bandshell for the multicultural flag parade, which begins at 10:45 a.m., Drum Canada at 11 a.m., and the opening ceremony from 11:10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Afterward, residents can spend the day wandering through the park, discovering local artisans, enjoying multicultural food, cooling off in the beer garden, and taking in a wide range of performances.

This year, Art in the Park will be located at the west end of the park near the Rose Garden. Near the Rotary Bandshell, kids can play on the inflatables in the Kid Funzone, and residents will find a variety of community booths and food trucks.

To help plan the day, an online interactive map of the park outlining Art in the Park artisans, Multicultural Society booths, community vendors, beer garden, and entertainment is available at Kamloops.ca/CanadaDay.

And …as usual nobody seems to think it would be financially prudent to mention the cost of putting on this new techno-show. Shouldn’t the cost be mentioned or is it irrelevant. How much will this maybe hour long ‘entertainment’ cost us taxpayers compared to what we have been spending on the July 1st fireworks shows over the past years?
