A man in his 80s died today (Feb. 28, 2024) in a fire that consumed a home south of Little Fort. He was the lone occupant.

The Little Fort Fire Department and Blackpool Fire Rescue were called to a report of a structure fire on Webb Road at 8:11 a.m. just south of Little Fort and within the Little Fort Fire Department response area.

Blackpool Fire Rescue chief Mike Savage and assistant chief Deitrich Rempel attended the scene ahead of fire crews while on their way to a meeting in Kamloops. The home was already fully involved.

Fire crews arrived soon after and, due to the fire’s intensity, they were forced to take a defensive stance in fighting the fire, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District said. The fire was contained to a single structure but “no rescue attempt was possible in the affected structure.”

An investigation determined the fire started in materials at the base of the stairway leading to the second storey of the home. The source of ignition could not be determined due to the heavy fire damage.

RCMP are notifying next of kin, and the TNRD said it can’t comment on the victim’s identity. The B.C. Coroners Service is continuing to investigate.

  1. He was a 76 year old man, not in his 80s.
