Police are investigating a sudden death after remains located at the scene of a fire have been confirmed human.

On Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, around 10 p.m., Kamloops Fire Rescue extinguished a fire at what was believed to be a transient camp on the bank of the South Thompson River near the Red Bridge.

On Tuesday Jan. 23, 2024, around 1:40 p.m., a worker who attended the scene for cleanup discovered the remains amongst the debris, and police were called.

“Today, Wednesday Jan. 24, the BC Coroners Service attended the scene and confirmed the remains to be human,” said RCMP Corp. Crystal Evelyn.

A police presence remains in the area. The ongoing investigation is being conducted in partnership with KFR, and with support from the Forensic Identification Services Unit, an RCMP fire investigator, frontline officers, the Serious Crime Unit, and General Investigations Support Team, as they work to identify the deceased and establish what occurred.

The BC Coroners Service is conducting a concurrent investigation.

Anyone with information that could assist is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-2290.
